I'm sitting here, sweatily blogging away in my not-very-breathable pleather blogging chair, and that can only mean one thing: summer's here. Some lunatics like the heat, but the rest of us prefer to fight like hell, and you've got to have the right arsenal to do it.

China and the US Are Going to Sit Down and Talk About All This Hacking
China's been hacking up a storm recently, up to and including stealing sensitive, confidential weapon designs from the US
Interested in a Cord Taco?
Most cord organizers I’ve seen are made of Velcro or plastic or even fabric, but very few of them are made of leather. The Cord Taco 5-Pack from the This is Ground shop on Etsy has five leather cord organizers for the price of a single leather organizer from some companies. Each Taco is a circular piece of leather that folds around your cords, cables, or earbuds and locks closed with a metallic button (black or gold, depending on leather color) to keep everything organized. You’ll set a set of black or tan (or mixed) Tacos for $25.99.

How Manic Are You About Organizing Emails?
I get a lot of email. Not so much that it's threatening my quality of life, but definitely a lot. I mainly use Gmail and I have some basic organizational systems in place (a label here, a star there). I have to keep up with the daily onslaught and maintain my inbox, but like I said I don't associate a lot of stress with it. Email is embedded pretty deeply in my subconscious at this point. But some people I know have organizational methods that I find scary, and any system breakdown causes them emotional turmoil. Are you manic about inbox maintenance, or do you take a come what may approach? Organize your thoughts below.

Un-invite mosquitoes from your next outdoor activity
I think most states joke about mosquitoes being their state bird, and North Carolina is certainly a state that could make the insect their official bird. It’s been warm here for a while, and I’ve already gotten bites. Terminix has a line of AllClear mosquito “solutions” that looks interesting. Instead of using light to attract them and then zapping them, the AllClear Tabletop Mosquito Repeller emits an “all-natural, proven-effective blend of non-toxic, botanical oils that are safe around children and pets.” You don’t have to slather yourself in repellent, and you don’t have to listen to the unpleasant sound of frying insects during your picnic. The coverage area is 15′ X 15′. Each cartridge works for about 18 hours, and a set of batteries lasts about 8 hours. The AllClear Tabletop Mosquito Repeller is $14.99, and a pack of two replacement scented cartridges is $6.99. You can check out the other AllClear products at the Terminix link above.

Google: 'We won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time'
While the public decides how to deal with Google Glass-wearing cyborgs walking among us, there are already startups trying to add facial recognition to the device. That includes the MedRef for Glass app for Doctors and an API created by Lambda Labs that's on the way. Unfortunately, apparently due to privacy concerns, a post tonight by the Project Glass team says that it will not approve any app using the tech for release -- at least until it has some privacy protections in place. That's the same standard it previously said would need to be met before it added facial recognition to its own services.
We've been listening closely to you, and many have expressed both interest and concern around the possibilities of facial recognition in Glass. As Google has said for several years, we won't add facial recognition features to our products without having strong privacy protections in place. With that in mind, we won't be approving any facial recognition Glassware at this time.
Without approval, we don't expect to see any standard apps with the API built-in, however with the headset's current wide open nature, we assume interested hackers will be able to get the software running if they so desire. So, how comfortable do you feel having a conversation with someone wearing Glass, considering third parties may add extra features even if Google itself is not involved? Check out the full statement from Google linked below, as well as a look at Lambda Labs from TechCrunch.

DirecTV GenieGO DVR streaming app arrives on Android
DirecTV subscribers with a penchant for travel have long had access to the Nomad (now GenieGO), a box that packages their DVR recordings for viewing on PCs and iOS devices. They haven't had an Android app, however, until now. Like its iOS peer, the new GenieGO client (which is new, despite the version number) can either directly stream recorded shows or download them for offline catch-up sessions. Don't expect just any old Android hardware to work, though -- DirecTV can only vouch for compatibility with a small roster of devices that focuses mostly on Motorola, the Nexus line and Samsung. Nonetheless, any customer who has both a GenieGO and a Google inclination can give the app a shot at the source links.
[Thanks, Alex]

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features
The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.
If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!
