Facebook Photo Sync boots smartphone snaps to a private album as you shoot

Facebook Photo Sync boots smartphone photos to a private album as you shoot

Can't be bothered with adding photos to your Facebook albums à la carte? Well, Photo Sync has your name all over it. Rolling out today for Android and iOS, the new service automatically sends images from your smartphone (or Galaxy Camera, perhaps?) to a private album in the cloud. Once you're ready to flip your frames public, simply tick a box on each image to post it. And, because everything's easier to understand with a fancy promo video, you can learn all about Photo Sync in the dialog-free Facebook montage at the source link below.

How Secure is My Password lets you know just that

howsecureismypassword
We've all heard it before; you need to select a lengthy password, one that's hard to guess. Not a dictionary word. And it has to have some capital letters in it too, and some digits, and a symbol or two won't hurt either.

That's a handy set of rules to keep in mind, but How Secure is My Password helps us understand why they're important.

It's basically like a full-screen version of one of those password-strength meters websites sometimes use. But instead of showing you a bar going from "weak" to "strong", it shows you an estimation of how long your password would take to crack. That's a much more visceral way to understand why your password is strong.

For example, when I entered "rabbit", it came back with "your password is one of the 500 most common passwords. It could be cracked almost instantly". "rabbit5" would take two hours, "$rabbit5" would take 38 days, and "$rabbitZ5" would take 237 years. It's quite enlightening to see what a difference three simple characters can make.

Would You Ever Name Your Child After a Gadget?

Because all the good names are already taken, it's tempting for mothers to just pop out a kid, look around the room, and say I name thee Curtain Rod. But even that would be preferable to the actual rise in people naming their kids after technology. More »

YouTube Live now streaming select partners in real time

Not content with limiting its dominance in streaming uploaded videos, YouTube is now ready to take on competitors like Justin.TV and Ustream. The new YouTube Live service is being rolled out to select YouTube partners and will enable real-time broadcasting. In its official announcement, Google states that "The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead."

You can check out live broadcasts at http://www.youtube.com/live, where you'll also find a schedule of upcoming episodes from beta partners like Revision3 and Destructoid. You're also able to subscribe to YouTube Live broadcasts -- which will ensure you're notified when a new episode is coming up.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.

Add a Windows 8 user tile to your Windows 7 taskbar

Now that Windows 8 images have begun leaking out, it's only a matter of time until developers start releasing mods for Windows 7 which mimic upcoming features. Over at Into Windows, they've spotted one such mod already.

In the earliest Windows 8 images, we saw Windows Live integration on the taskbar. In the far right corner, there's a user tile displayed. If you'd like to do the same on Windows 7, download Taskbar User Tile from DeviantArt user AngelWZR.

Once installed, your current picture will appear on the taskbar. Click it, and a menu appears which allows you to log off, switch users, and access the control panel. Right now, the mod only works if your taskbar is displayed on the bottom of your Windows desktop.

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel's patents to protect against litigation trolls

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google's $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn't mean that Google will automatically win Nortel's massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google's relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel's portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It's worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents -- which are nearly all telecoms-related -- will be used to defend against Oracle's attacks on Android's use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

Keep data roaming charges under control with Globalgig

The Globalgig mobile hotspot, just announced by Voiamo, is the solution to outrageous data charges when you travel.  You purchase the Globalgig hotspot for $119, choose a data plan, and you’ll be able to use your data while at home or while traveling to other specific countries for no extra charges.  When you travel to (or live in) the USA, UK, or Australia, your Globalgig hotspot connects to a local network (Sprint, Three, or Optus, respectively) so you can check mail, get directions, surf, etc. on up to five connected devices simultaneously.  Data plans currently available are $25 for 1GB, $39 for 3GB, and $49 for 5GB, and you’ll get emails to alert you when you’ve used 50%, 85%, and 100% of your monthly data allotment.  You’ll never again have to come home to a data bill that costs as much as your plane ticket.

Firefox 4 Mobile officially released for Android and Maemo devices

Firefox 4 MobileMoments ago, Mozilla stripped the release candidate moniker from Firefox 4 Mobile and pronounced it fit for public release. If you have a Nokia N900 phone, or a fairly-modern Android 2.0-or-later device, go ahead and install it from the Market, by using scanning the QR code after the break, or by visiting Firefox.com/m.

Accompanying the release is the launch of Spark, a cute social game that's designed to fuel the adoption of Firefox 4 Mobile, much like last week's use of Glow and Twitter Party during Firefox 4 PC's release.

While the browser still feels a little rough around the edges, it's definitely worth trying out if you're still using Android's stock browser. Its JavaScript performance is significantly better than any other Android browser, and if you use Firefox on your PC, its built-in Sync functionality is awesome.

Over the next few days we'll have plenty of tips and tricks for Firefox 4 Mobile, and a list of the best add-ons available for the new browser.

Jawbone UP – Take 2

The exercise band/pedometer/calorie-counter market is growing and growing, and Jawbone’s first foray into the market created quite a stir. Much is the pity it was for the wrong reasons. Due to design faults, Jawbone, better known for their speakers and headsets, recalled the first model after a short time on the market.  Their new and improved version of the UP is finally ready for release.   When paired with the appropriate app, it’s capable of collecting personal data such as sleep patterns, food intake and calories burned (including the ability to scan in food barcodes), and it gives you an insight into your daily habits and how to improve them.

Available in 8 colours, the water resistant wrist band is meant to be worn 24/7 .  Currently there’s only an iOS app available, with an Android version coming soon.  Pricing is $129.99 from Jawbone’s store and estimated shipping is December 18, 2012.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

Slope may very well be the only stand you need for your iPad, or any other tablet you own

Slope is a new Kickstarter project that aims to be not only multifunctional but is designed in a way that makes you wonder why Apple themselves didn't design something similar. The best part is, it doesn't only work with the iPad, but any tablet you have laying around.

The unique thing about Slope is that it doesn't depend on traditional brackets, levers, or magnets to hold the device in place. Instead it uses suction by way of thousands of tiny suction cups that create air pockets. This is why Slope should work with almost any device or tablet you've got laying around.

Suction is the thing that drives its function. Slope has two nanofoam pads affixed to its aluminum base, one gripping the backside of the tablet, the other gripping the surface of the desk underneath. These pads are comprised of a special make of foam that, as you can see from the video, are extremely effective.

The creators of Slope need $60,000 before December 20th to get the project funded and as of writing this, they've currently managed just above $43,000. If you choose to help fund Slope there are quite a few options they're offering backers. The minimum pledge amount is only $1 while the max is $134. There are several in betweens that'll get you different items for helping Slope reach its goal. For $69 you'll get a full size Dekke Slope large enough for 10" tablets, which means your iPad, if the project is funded. It's not a bad deal and in my opinion, it's a much more elegant solution than stands and docks that are currently on the market for iPad.

Hit the link below to check out more photos, info, and to back the project on Kickstarter.

Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn't matter

Survival Lab
In most games, dying is a bad thing. You have to start all over again, or at least revert to the last save point and lose some progress. Not so in Survival Lab: in this pixelated gem you play as a lone individual pitted against ruthless weapons in a sealed chamber. You have to run, jump and duck, collecting little yellow things (I have no idea what they're called).

For each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).

Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won't kill you so quickly.

What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn't reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you're into the whole retro-gaming thing.

Samsung Galaxy Axiom hitting U.S. Cellular for free on contract

Samsung Galaxy Axiom

We caught a look at leaked press images 2 weeks ago of a device -- the Galaxy Axiom -- that looked to be a rebranded Galaxy S3 Mini destined for U.S. Cellular, and now it looks like the rumors were correct. The device has a 4-inch WVGA (that's 480x800) display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 5MP camera and is running Android 4.0 with TouchWiz. Like a few recent phones from U.S. Cellular, it also has 4G LTE connectivity, which won't do you much good unless you're in a few choice markets where it has been deployed. It's also one of the rare devices to ship with Google Wallet support baked in.

Apparently the price varies by location, but we're seeing it for just $0.01 with a contract, or $399 without. Take a look at the source link below if you're interested in picking one up.

Fujitsu's Arrows V F-04E launches with 4.7-inch display, fingerprint scanner, lust for ramen

When Mr. Fujitsu was designing the Arrows V F-04E for NTT DoCoMo's winter lineup, he probably wrote "ALL THE FEATURES" and knocked-off early. That might explain the pile of tech nestled beneath that 4.7-inch, 1,280 x 720 display -- including 64GB Storage, a 13.1-megapixel camera, NFC, 2,420mAh battery and a fingerprint scanner. The Tegra 3-powered handset also comes with Fujitsu's Human Centric Engine, which, like all J-Phones, promises a few quasi sci-fi features like calibrating the display to be comfortable for your age. It's also water-and-dust resistant and you'll be able to watch 1-Seg broadcasts while on the Bullet Train -- the perfect combination to make westerners feel jealous.
