Roth Ceramic Subwoofer Drops That Bass

Warm and deep. Photo: Joey Roth

In an age of throw-away Ikea furniture, artist-branded headphones and smartphones with the shelf life of soft cheese, finding gadgets you’ll cherish and pass down to your children is tough. Industrial designer Joey Roth is here to help. Roth’s Ceramic Speakers are a splendid mix of minimalistic design coupled with warm, rich audio. We reviewed Roth’s first speakers a couple of years ago and, while they looked great and sounded decent, we noted the lack of deep bass. Now, Roth has returned from his workshop with stark-white subwoofer ready to tackle those bass-heavy jams.

The subwoofer drops the low-end of the Ceramic Speaker family from 70Hz to 40Hz. The tube-shaped speaker sits atop an aluminum-and-birch amplifier and connects to the current Roth Ceramic Speakers via a single cable.

All of this audio warmth is nestled inside ceramic and comes at a price. A very high one. The original Roth Ceramic Speakers will set you back $500. The new Ceramic subwoofer will appease the bass gods but will cost an additional $500. It starts shipping in December.

Maybe you can sell a couple of those expired smartphones you have lying around to raise the cash.
