Air New Zealand Hires the LOTR Effects Wizards For Its Flight Safety Video

By Andrew Liszewski

If you’re ever lucky enough to fly Air New Zealand, you might want to actually pay attention to the safety video that plays before takeoff. The airline hired WETA, the effects shop responsible for The Lord Of the Ring films, to punch up the video. And not surprisingly, they delivered (and then some) with a short film called An Unexpected Briefing that looks like it takes place in Middle Earth.

Android 4.2 camera, gallery ported to Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean 4.1.1

DNP Android 42 camera, gallery ported to Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean411

So, you're loving the new gallery and camera options we saw on Jelly Bean 4.2 and have no intention of waiting for that OS for your former flagship Galaxy Nexus? A certain dmmarck on Android Central's forums has sorted that, and you can now grab the camera app for your so-last-month 4.1.1 OS on that handset. Other than a Photo Sphere bug, it's apparently working like the factory version, but newbies beware -- the installation requires some Android hacking chops. You can grab it at the source.

Can’t find a camera person willing to film all your heroic exploits?  SOLOSHOT has you covered. Myst linking book replica goes on sale with full PC inside, won't take us to other worlds video

Most of us who remember Myst are content to relive the halcyon days of click-and-watch puzzle games by loading up the iPhone port. Mike Ando is slightly more... dedicated. He just spent the past six years building a replica of the Cyan game's signature, Age-traveling link books that includes a full Windows XP PC with a 1.6GHz Atom, a 2-hour battery, a 5-inch touchscreen and every playable game from the Myst series stored on a CF card. And while we've seen books hiding devices before, Ando's attention to detail might just raise the eyebrows of hardcore custom PC and gaming fans alike: he went so far as to gut and emboss a 135-year-old copy of Harper's New Monthly Magazine to match Cyan's reference tome as closely as possible. It's tempting for anyone who cut their teeth on CD-based gameplay through Myst, but perfect devotion to one of the better-known fictional worlds will cost an accordingly steep $15,625. We wouldn't have minded seeing some real intra-world travel for the cash outlay.

Microsoft posts Windows Phone 8 SDK, kicks off a new era for apps

Microsoft posts Windows Phone 8 SDK, lets developers get cracking at last

The word "finally" is often abused (including by us), but here it's deserved: after months of knowing about Windows Phone 8 with little to do but wait or support rival platforms, developers can finally download version 8.0 of the Windows Phone SDK. The kit lets teams get cracking on apps that take advantage of the Windows 8-related code base in Windows Phone 8 and all the hooks that go with the new OS, such as the broader hardware support, ties to the lock screen and Wallet. You'd better be an early adopter on the desktop if you're eager to start programming for the equally new mobile platform, though -- the SDK won't run on anything less than a 64-bit copy of Windows 8. We're still anticipating a much improved ecosystem now that Windows Phone app writers can do more than twiddle their thumbs.

Mozilla publishes name and shame list of slow Firefox add-ons, cracks down on tardy devs

Firefox slow-addons list
Mozilla, continuing its year-long crusade to speed up Firefox startup and shutdown times, has published a name and shame list of the Firefox's slowest add-ons.

The list is just one part of Mozilla's new efforts to highlight slow add-ons, and to help developers make their add-ons more efficient. Over the next two weeks, 'slow performance warnings' will be introduced in the add-on gallery so that users can see, before installation, which add-ons will slow down their browser. If that isn't enough to spur developers into cleaning up their add-ons, Mozilla has also begun reaching out to developers of slow add-ons with tips on how to improve add-on performance. Finally, add-on developers will soon have the ability to perform 'on-demand performance testing,' so that they can test their add-on before it's deployed publicly.

Mozilla reports that the average Firefox add-on slows down Firefox's start-up time by 10% -- which means, if you install 10 add-ons, you will double your start-up time. On fast desktop PCs that kind of slowdown might be negligible, but on older computers, laptops and smartphones, it could be the difference between a 5 and 10 second startup. Mozilla has obviously realized that while massive performance gains might've been made with Firefox 4, the addition of third-party add-ons can destroy any user-perceived improvements.

In other news, Mozilla says that a future build of Firefox will block the installation of add-ons (such as toolbars) by third-party software. Add-ons and toolbars that are bundled in this way will require explicit approval when you next open up Firefox. Hooray!

iMpulse keychain game controller and key finder gains Kickstarter funding

iMpulse keychain game controller and key finder gains Kickstarter fundingThe iMpulse keychain game controller and key finder has gained Kickstarter funded status with pledges of more than double what it needed. The iMpulse is a rather neat looking game controller but where this one differs to all of the others that have come and gone is in the size department. The iMpulse is tiny and is designed to go everywhere your keys go as it comes with its own keychain. On top of being a game controller with dedicated buttons and joystick, it also acts as a key finder to help you find your keys too.

iMpulse is the SMALLEST wireless controller for mobile devices - it's also a key finder & media controller! (iPhone/iPad, Android, PCs) The iMpulse is built for mobile gaming. You can ALREADY play hundreds of iOS and Android games on the iMpulse, and we're constantly adding support for more games!

The iMpulse is cute, tough, and kicks butt. You can finally play games like Temple Run, Pac-Man, Air Attack HD, and Dynamite Jack with the true tactile response of real trigger buttons, while you slide the thumbstick with abandon. NO MORE having to dodge your own thumb to SEE where you're trying to go.

If all of these features were not enough, the iMpulse can also be used to control media playback and become a remote camera shutter controller too. If you like the look of the iMpulse, it’s not too late to become an early adopter. You can be one of the first to get your hands on one by pledging at least $25; be quick as there are only six days left to go. The iMpulse has already attracted nearly $100,000 of pledges so has almost doubled its pledge target for funding.

What do you think of the iMpulse?

Microsoft launches Windows Phone 8, but is it enough to compete with the iPhone?

After an innumerable amount of teases, both from Microsoft and their manufacturing partners, Windows Phone 8 has finally, officially, been launched at a special event today and our Mobile Nations sibling site WPCentral is all over all it.

Daniel Rubino has a full Windows Phone 8 review up for your comparative pleasure, and he's unsurprisingly positive about Microsoft's latest smartphone OS:

For current Windows Phone users, Windows Phone 8 is a major step in the right direction. It continues to fill in gaps, expand functionality and create some new areas. The new hardware abilities make what was already a fast OS even more horsepower and you can feel it when doing everyday tasks. Combined with the new bold phones designed by HTC and Nokia, Windows Phone 8 has the best chance ever to succeed. Let’s see what happens.

And Alex Dobie has an HTC 8X review up, at least in preliminary hardware form, to round things out.

By any standard, HTC’s Windows Phone 8X is a stunning piece of technology. There’s no shortage of plastic smartphones out there, but this is plastic done right. HTC’s combined leading smartphone internals with a minimalist design and triple-A build quality, and it should come as no surprise that the result is a worthy signature handset for Windows Phone 8.

My own opinions of Windows Phone haven't changed much if at all with the new version. Microsoft's Windows Phone team deserves an incredible amount of credit for making a modern, elegant, beautiful new mobile operating system -- one that's since dragged the entire, entrenched company into the future with it. But Microsoft's management has stuck so solidly, stupidly, to Windows that they've cut the legs out from under it at every turn.

Again, call it Xphone, put Halo on it alongside Office, and it's got an incredible shot at success. Leave it as it is, stuck with the Windows brand, caught be carrier must-carry iOS and carrier want-to-carry Android, and it'll be an incredible battle to even get to 3rd place, despite BlackBerry remaining in free fall.

Check out WPCentral's complete coverage for more videos and analysis.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends' presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

This Is the Best Toilet to Ever Play Goalie

Although it's probably completely against Fifa regulations, Japanese luxury toilet maker Toto has turned one of its commodes into what has to be the greatest soccer goalie ever. It's a step-up from the company's Poop-Powered Toiletcycle. But as impressive as it is, it's still pretty useless as far as toilet innovation goes. More »
