Power goes out in India, affecting 600 million

Power goes out in India, affecting 600 million

A power outage struck India's northern and eastern electrical grids earlier today, hitting around 600 million people -- that's roughly half of the country's population of 1.2 billion -- cutting off electricity to businesses, transit and traffic lights, to name but a few. The power failure hit around 1pm local time "without warning" according to the electric company. The incident follows another major outage the day prior, which affected around 300 million people. Regions have taken to seeking out alternative energy sources such as hydro power, with local business utilizing backup diesel generators and the like, which have helped keep hospitals and airports in service.

Scrabble Helper helps you improve your Words With Friends gameplay

scrabblehelper
If you play Scrabble (or a scrabble-like game) from time to time, you may want to check out Scrabble Helper. This simple website is a godsend when you're at a loss for words. Simply enter whatever letters you have, and the word you'd like to connect with. Scrabble helper comes up with a whole bunch of suggestions sorted by score.

The site lets you select one of five dictionaries - Scrabble International/US, Lexulous International/US, and Words With Friends. Some people might say this constitutes cheating -- I think if the other side knows you're doing it, it's definitely not cheating. And it doesn't take the challenge out of the game, because implementing Scrabble Helper's suggestions and deciding which words you'd like to connect with still takes a fair bit of thought.

Very handy, though perhaps not one for the Scrabble puritans in the crowd.

Will Social Media Spoil the Olympics?

The Summer Olympics officially open Friday, but as the games are taking place in London, which is six hours ahead of the East Coast of the United States and nine hours ahead of the West Coast, it will be very much a "tape delayed" affair. This isn't unusual in the world of international sporting events, but it's relatively easy to escape news on the recently concluded European Cup or the Tour de France. Trying to avoid Olympic game outcomes, though, is turning into a challenge worthy of an Olympic event itself, thanks to social media.

MacBook Pro review (13-inch, mid-2012)

DNP MacBook Pro review 13inch, mid2012 how does the refreshed MBP fare with a new Ivy Bridge chipset

When the MacBook Pro with Retina display is in the game, Apple's "regular" Pros may seem a bit like also-rans. After all, why would you choose them when you could get a brilliant 15-inch 2,880 x 1,800 IPS panel and a Core i7 Ivy Bridge processor? Well, price, for one thing. While we walked away from our Retina MBP review mighty impressed, that model starts at $2,199. The latest crop of Pros, meanwhile, keep the same pricing scheme as last year's models ($1,199 and up), but step up to Intel's third-generation Ivy Bridge processors. We took the entry-level 13-incher for a spin to get a feel for how the dual-core Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000 stack up to the competition. Read on to see how it fared.

London 2012 Olympics
If TV broadcast tape delay and streaming restricted to pay-TV subscribers isn't entirely ruining your experience, the first week of the 2012 Games has started off with a bang. There's plenty of sporting action to go around and the world records have already started falling. Live coverage is early in the day for US time zones, while NBC is keeping some of the more anticipated events off TV and only online until its prime time airing later.

For viewers we have a few tips, like using Google to search Olympics + [sport] to get a minute by minute schedule of the events in your local time so you don't miss 'em on the live stream. Also, check your cable or satellite provider, most have expanded options to help you catch all the sports, while Cox and DirecTV are doing the multiview thing, Comcast has added Olympics specifics filters to its remote apps, and Time Warner Cable has added more channels to its streaming iPad app.
(All week, NBC channels and online)

Total Recall (Mind-Bending Edition)
The Paul Verhoeven / Arnold Schwarzenegger classic is back on Blu-ray and should be better looking this time around. So, why opt for this one instead of a ticket to the remake this weekend? Beyond the obvious reasons, it's also cheaper, currently listed at $7.99 on Amazon.
($7.99 on Amazon)

NFL Preseason
It's finally time for football again, and while it's just preseason action, we'll be ready to see the Saints take on the Cardinals Sunday night from Canton Ohio. Also worth checking out, the HOF induction ceremony Saturday night as DB Jack Butler, C Dermontti Dawson, DE Chris Doleman, DT Cortez Kennedy, RB Curtis Martin and T Willie Roaf take their place among the other all-time greats.
(August 5th, NFL Network, 8PM)

Next iPhone, New iPad Mini to Be Announced Sept. 12, Report Says

The next iPhone is expected this fall. Above we see a purported iPhone 5 chassis assembled from individually leaked parts. Photo: iLab.cc

Referencing “sources who have proven accurate in the past,” Rene Ritchie of the website iMore reports the next-generation iPhone and iPad mini will be announced on September 12, with both products available for purchase on September 21. The fall release puts the phone and perpetually rumored tablet on the market in time for the holiday shopping season.

While iMore may not have much name recognition in the blogosphere, it has a strong track record in successfully reporting Apple product launch dates. On February 13 of this year, Ritchie accurately reported that the new iPad (which he described as iPad 3) would be announced on March 7. The author had similar success predicting pre-order dates for the iPhone 4S.

It’s all but certain that Apple will announce a new iPhone soon — the iPhone 4S is ripe for an update, and iPhone 5 rumor reports are hitting critical mass. In fact, just this Sunday, a website in Japan reported it had assembled the new phone’s chassis from random leaked parts. However, an imminent small form factor iPad — rumors peg the display at 7.85 inches — is much less certain. The smaller iPad would go toe-to-toe against the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7, entering a sizing category with proven consumer interest. While Apple dominates the tablet market, it has yet to release a device that challenges the smaller tablet field.

If the iMore report is true, Apple would be releasing the next-generation iPhone a little less than a year after releasing the iPhone 4S, which hit the streets on October 14, 2011. Apple traditionally employed a yearly refresh cycle for the iPhone until last year’s 16-month wait for the iPhone 4S.

The updated iPhone is expected to sport a smaller dock connector, larger four-inch touch screen, and a redesigned case.

HTC closes office in South Korea following slow sales

Android Central

HTC has announced it is to close its office in South Korea, according to reports from Korean news agency Yonhap. The move reportedly follows slow sales of HTC's smartphones in the country, and continuing difficulty in competing with Samsung in its own back yard.

In a market dominated by domestic manufacturers, analysts at Canalys estimate HTC had just one percent market share in South Korea in the first quarter of the year, down from two percent in 2011. By comparison, a recent report from Korea's MK news site estimated up to a 70 percent share of the Korean market for Samsung by the end of July, following the recent Galaxy S3 launch in the country.

HTC has taken a beating in terms of profits and market share over the past six months, after it saw record earnings in 2011. The Taiwanese manufacturer saw a 57.8 percent year-on-year fall in net profits during the second quarter of 2012, a situation it blamed on lackluster European sales of the HTC One series, in addition to litigation from Apple which briefly delayed the phones' U.S. launch.
