PayPal looks to steal limelight from NFC with new PayPal inStore app

PayPal looks like it could steal some attention away from NFC (Near Field Communication) payments in the UK with the release of its latest app. The new app, which is called PayPal inStore, allows UK shoppers to use their iPhone to pay for goods within certain stores. Those stores currently include fashion chains Coast, Oasis, Warehouse, and Karen Millen.

The PayPal inStore app, available for Android and Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) devices, brings the flexibility of online shopping to the high street. If you want to use your mobile to pay for your new summer outfit, our app simply generates a unique barcode and transaction number, which the shop cashier scans to take payment from your PayPal account. It even works when there is no mobile or Wi-Fi signal!  Safety and security are at the heart of everything PayPal does and this is no different when it comes to mobile payments.  You unlock the application with a unique PIN number, and no personal or financial information, or money, is stored on your phone.

PayPal is actively talking to many other stores so it shouldn’t be long before the technology gets rolled out to other retailers. PayPal may have a fight on its hands as NFC is certainly seen as the standard that most credit card companies are backing for contactless payments. However there has been very little seen of the technology in the mobile world with the exception of Google Wallet. Apple has been rumored to include the technology in its next devices but there is still no concrete plans in place to embrace the technology. That may well change with the release of the next iPhone but until then, PayPal may have built up a nice lead in the UK high street.

I very much like the idea of ditching my cards and simply using my iPhone to pay as I go; after all, it is always with me wherever I am. It will be interesting to see if  Apple has anything to say about NFC or a similar system at WWDC 2012.

US Cybercounterterrorism Team Takes on al-Qaida

The interagency Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications last week revealed that its Digital Outreach Team responded to pictures posted by al-Qaida supporters on Yemeni discussion forums. To counter the images of coffins covered by the U.S. flag, the center posted pictures of coffins draped with the Yemen flag, along with Arabic messages regarding the human toll inflicted on Yemen by al-Qaida. The Obama administration formed the center last fall in order to use communication techniques to sabotage the efforts of al-Qaida and other terrorist groups.

Windows 8 wallpaper available to download, Jupiter and Twin UI spotted

With Windows 8 milestone 3 now up for grabs for select Microsoft Connect partners, it's inevitable that leaked bits and pieces will start popping up around the Web. In fact, the first "official" wallpaper image from the still-brewing OS is already making the rounds.

As you can see, it's got a similar feel to the good ol' Windows 7 default background, but features a more subdued smattering of cerulean hues. Those of you who want to use the Windows 8 wallpaper on your current desktop can download it from our file dump.

A few other details have been revealed, too. According to ZDNet's source, the Windows 8 Jupiter libraries and Twin UI are starting to take shape -- though all that's been located thus far are "[various files] scattered throughout the OS" and the aptly-named twinui.dll.

Google Chrome and Chromium add protection against malicious downloads

Google Chrome already sports a number of security-minded features, from Incognito mode to a software sandbox which makes exploiting the browser a Herculean task. Now, Google has announced additional protection for Chromium and Chrome users.

Built upon the Safe Browsing API, the new feature introduces protection against malicious downloads. If a download link appears in the Safe Browsing blacklist, Chrome and Chromium will warn users against downloading -- a save button is still presented, of course, in case you're convinced a file is perfectly safe to download.

We'd like to see something a bit more eye-catching than the red warning icon -- like perhaps painting the entire bar red. Many of the people a feature like this aims to protect probably won't notice the icon or change in wording as they'll be focused on clicking the save button.

Google is initially making download protection available to Chrome dev channel users, and you'll likely see it in Canary and Chromium snapshot builds as well. After thorough testing, beta and stable users will be next in line.

Canada's Rogers network counting down to its own Galaxy S III preorders

A countdown related to the Samsung Galaxy S III has appeared on Canadian carrier Rogers website, which ends at noon EDT, so it looks like we'll see preorders start today.  We already knew that Rogers was going to carry the Galaxy S III, as well as a majority of the Canadian carriers.  We've seen evidence that the phone will be released on June 20 in Canada, and this is just one more indication that this may hold true.  There's no official word on specs or what proc is inside, but it's a pretty safe bet that the LTE flavored Galaxy S III will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 inside due to LTE compatibility problems with current quad-core chips.

Google+ Local sees reviews from friends, Zagat invade your restaurant hunts (video)

We'd been wondering what Google would do following its acquisition of Zagat, and now we know: it's part of Google+ Local, a boost to Maps, general search, and Google+ itself. Zagat's point system now automatically shows up in search results for restaurants that have been given the extra scrutiny. Those of us who don't trust The Man for reviews will also now see Google+ friends' picks surface at the same time. The addition is considered important enough that Google is even adding a Local tab on Google+ just to show recommendations, so you won't have to abandon your constant updating (you're always posting on Google+, right?) to find a well-rated sushi place. Local should be live soon, if not now, and will make search plus Your World that much more omnipresent.

Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers -- Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista... what's with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It's also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9's Windows 7 integration features -- like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft's IE6countdown.com now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?
